Should I Park My Car In My Garage?

Over the last ten years or so, the use of garages has developed further than being a place you simply park your car.  People now often use their garage as extra storage space, or even something a little more adventurous, like a home gym. This evolution seems to be in line with the development of garage door variations now available.

However, parking the family car in the garage still has some significant benefits.

Car insurance premiums

The biggest and perhaps most obvious benefit is the reduction in car insurance premiums. Whilst in most cases, parking in a locked garage will only provide you with a marginal saving on your insurance premiums, it is a lot safer overall.

This is because….

Your car is less likely to be stolen

Leaving your car outside and unprotected makes it an easier target for thieves. Your car is less likely to be broken into if it’s hidden away in a locked garage. Want to add some extra security around your home and garage?  A motion-detecting light fixture above the main garage door is a great idea.

Greater peace of mind

We’ve already covered the obvious security benefits of parking a car in a locked garage.  It’s also smart to protect your vehicle from the elements. Weather conditions, such as rain, wind and sunshine can cause aesthetic damage to the paintwork over time. This will provide you with peace of mind, especially if you view your car as your ‘pride and joy’.

Increased comfort and faster morning routine

This only really matters in winter, but parking in a garage means that you won’t have to face scraping ice and snow off your car before work. It isn’t pleasant and often means that you have to leave the warmth of your home earlier to be on time.

The downsides of parking in your garage

There are always downsides to everything, and parking in your garage is no different. Keeping your car in your garage means sacrificing space that could be used for a variety of things.  This could be extra storage, a home gym, or even a workshop.

It could be the case that your garage is just a little on the small side.  As technology has developed, some older houses have garages that are too small to park a modern-day car.

It all depends on the type of garage door

The type of garage door plays a significant part in answering this question. Up & over garage doors are very traditional, and will provide easy access for a vehicle. However, you may want to consider installing an electric garage door.  This will make parking in your garage more convenient, as you won’t have to open it manually.

Roller garage doors are more popular when it comes to automation, as it requires minimal overhead space, & will allow you to still use the rafter in the garage for easy storage.
